Protecting those that Protect and Serve
A popular and appropriate motto adopted by many members of law enforcement is "…to protect and serve." Around the globe law enforcement agencies have the challenging task of protecting and serving citizens under their jurisdiction and have been aggressive in adopting emerging protective technologies to assist in this critical endeavor.
A law enforcement agency that serves a major U.S. city has engaged a glass fragment retention system in order to mitigate damage due to failed glass in the wake of a blast event. The project, partially funded by the Department of Homeland Security, utilizes a retrofit of eight mil security film installed to the interior surface of the glass secured to the frame with an innovative flexible attachment system.
Pentagon Protection USA responded to the request for proposal along with seven other potential vendors and was awarded the project following a thorough evaluation process.
The basis of the award revolved around a weighted average ranking that assessed prospective vendors past relevant experience, proposed installation plan, selection of appropriate fragment retention film and deployment of an attachment system tailored to meet the client's performance and aesthetic needs.
The challenge of providing a glass containment system that achieved the desired protection level without compromising the existing aesthetic environment was an attainable task for the experienced team at Pentagon Protection USA.
The facility contained six different types of window systems. Each of these window systems had to be retrofitted with a system that would achieve a blast hazard condition level of 3a (low hazard level) when subjected to a 4.5 psi blast load. Ideally, the client wanted a system that would also compliment the building's aesthetic appearance.
Pentagon Protection USA proposed a system that would meet the performance requirements and compliment the building's appearance. The glass fragment retention system engaged by Pentagon Protection USA combined the installation of CPFilms' SCL SR PS 8 security film attached to the existing framing system in a four sided configuration with the Pentagon Elite™ flexible attachment system.
Three different profiles of the Pentagon Elite™ flexible attachment system were needed to fit the six varieties of window systems found in the building. Several of the window systems would not have been compatible with more traditional methods of attachment systems such as wet glaze and mechanical systems.
Engaging the Pentagon Elite™ flexible attachment system is a completely non – evasive procedure. It is not necessary to compromise the window system in any way. Traditional attachment systems considered for this project required the cutting of the gaskets and / or the need to sink screws into the window frames. The evaluation committee considered the non – evasive nature of the Pentagon Elite™ flexible attachment system to be a great benefit.
Pentagon Protection USA completed the installation of 16,000 square feet of eight mil security film secured with 16,000 linear feet of Pentagon Elite™ flexible attachment system in five weeks meeting the aggressive schedule proposed in the original submitted proposal. The crew was composed of four experienced installers and one project manager. Two electric scissor lifts were utilized to complete two atrium areas that reached approximately forty feet in height. The installation was completed with a minimum of disruption to the routine activities of a major metropolitan government building.
