One commonly used solution to the problem is the addition of a polyester safety film. Thick safety films do a good job of holding the glass fragments together in the event of breakage. THis is why they are referred to as "saftey films" or "fragment retention films". Holding the shards of flass together creates a safer work place... but not necessarily a more secure one. If the filmed glass is broken with enough force, it could be blown out or knocked out of its frame.
